This is a project in partnership with Leeds University Research Department which is trying to find out more about African Migrants / Africans living in the UK.
This project is funded by the British Academy for 14 months and will run until September 2009.
Project aims:
The project examines the experiences of migration and settlement of people who have moved from Africa to live in the Yorkshire region. In particular we are interested in their experiences of work, welfare, education, health and community and family. The project also has a strong intergenerational relations dimension and is interested in understanding how migration impacts upon family relationships, the challenges of bringing up children in a new country and the importance of maintaining links with family still residing in the country of origin.
Research questions will focus upon;
- Experiences of employment and accessing welfare services. Including experiences of using local services and community networks.
- Experiences of local community and neighbourhood. Where do they go for support and advice? What kinds of community networks and involvement are important to the lives of African migrants.
- How do individuals and families adapt to living in a different country?
- And how do these experiences and expectations vary across generations?
