The Environment Forum places a strong emphasis on better provision and use of green infrastructure in Leeds.

The Aire, it’s tributaries and navigations are a key aspect of Leeds’ Green Infrastructure more information on waterways and waterfront can be found here (link to the page on Aire Action Leeds).

Other key priorities for Green Infrastructure:

Space for growing food. We want people not to have to wait to get an allotment. We want more space for community food growing for environmental, health and wellbeing and community benefit and more space for edible planting on public land. We feel support for local food is important for better nutrition, exercise and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Leeds’ food system. Providing space for people to grow food together improves community cohesion.

Space for wildlife. Tree planting and the creation and enhancement of greenspaces and green corridors in Leeds is key to ensure we have good biodiversity. We want to ensure people have more opportunities to exercise in pleasant green spaces and enjoy and learn about wildlife. Green space is a shared resource and can be a focus for community activity. Green corridors should contain walking and cycling routes where possible.

In 2009 the Environment Forum will present a strategic rationale for investment in multifunctional greenspace and encourage partnership between groups interested in greenspace.
